Expert Help & Advice

Prepare your boat for winter

As the autumn leaves begin to fall and winter approaches, it's time to prepare your canal boat for the colder months ahead.

Whether you’re planning to winterise your boat or continue living aboard, Midland Chandlers has the products and expertise you need to stay warm, dry, and prepared for the season.

Antifreeze

Using antifreeze in a canal boat's cooling system during winter is important to prevent the water in the engine and related components from freezing.

When using antifreeze, it's essential to choose the right type and mix it according to the manufacturer's recommendations to ensure it provides the necessary protection.

Batteries

Properly storing and maintaining boat batteries over the winter is essential to ensure they remain in good condition and are ready for use in the spring.

Don't forget to isolate your batteries so you avoid draining them unnecessarily when your boat is not in use.

Bilge Pumps

Properly winterising your boat's bilge pumps is important to ensure they remain in good working condition and are ready to perform their essential task of removing water from the bilge when you start using your boat again.

Inspect, test and clean your bilge pump system, and remember to leave on automatic when vacating your boat.

Oil & Grease

Apply lubricants to moving components of the engine, to prevent seizure and premature failure.

Change the engine oil and run engine to coat internal components.

Engine Filters

Change your engine's fuel filters and oil filters in the system and run engine to coat internal components.

Don't forget to replace any fuel/water separator elements in the system.

Fresh Water Pumps

Properly winterising the fresh water system, including the fresh water pump, on your boat is essential to prevent damage from freezing temperatures and to ensure that the system remains in good working condition.

If you are leaving the boat for any extended period of time, make sure water systems and pumps are drained off to avoid burst pumps and pipes.

Stove Rope

Changing the stove rope on a boat's wood-burning or solid-fuel stove is typically a maintenance task that doesn't need to be specifically done because it's winter.

However, it's essential to inspect and replace the stove rope gasket when needed, regardless of the season, to ensure the stove's safety and efficiency.
