The Sterling Digital Battery Tester is a versatile tool designed to assess and evaluate the condition of batteries and the performance of charging devices, such as alternators and battery chargers.
The device measures the voltage of the battery, providing a basic indication of whether the battery is fully charged.
The crucial part of battery testing is the load test. The tester applies a significant load, typically 125 A, to the battery. During the load test, the battery should not only deliver the load but also maintain its voltage within an acceptable range. This test mimics real-world conditions to see if the battery can perform under a heavy load.
If the battery cannot sustain the load during the test, it suggests the battery is either defective or was not fully charged at the time of testing.
Ensuring that batteries are fully charged before conducting the test is vital to obtain accurate results.
How to use the tester:
1. Connect the unit to a 12V fully charged battery.
2. Adjust the CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) setting on the screen, with a maximum of 999A.
3. Press the load button to initiate the 10-second test.
4. The unit will provide you with a clear assessment of the battery's condition, indicating if it's good, weak, or bad.
In addition to battery testing, the unit can also evaluate the performance of charging devices, such as alternators and battery chargers.
It informs the user whether the charging device is operating effectively (good), showing signs of weakness, or requires attention (bad).
The battery tester is compact and lightweight measuring just 284(L) x 173(W) x 70mm(D) and weighing only 1.1kg. It is built with durable leads and clamps for reliable connections and long-lasting use.
The device is designed for testing individual 12V batteries. For systems of 24-36V or larger, you can split the battery bank into 12V sections for testing. It conducts load tests quickly, with results available in just 10 seconds. There's a short 2-minute waiting period between tests.
The device's safety feature trips at 13V to prevent overloading during high voltage load tests, ensuring safe operation.
